About Debbie
The Intersection of Leadership, Systems, and People
I’ve spent over 30 years working alongside the public sector, FE, VCSE, community organisations, and local communities. My career has been dedicated to supporting leaders through intense challenge, systemic transition, and those critical moments where decisions carry real, lasting consequence for people and communities.
I founded Debbie Gilbert & Co to offer independent, values-led support to leaders navigating complexity and high-stakes choices. My role is not to impose pre-packaged solutions, but to bring calm clarity, constructive challenge, and perspective where it matters most.
My Core Philosophy
Strong leadership is not about certainty or control, but about clarity, courage, and integrity.
This belief guides everything I do, particularly when external pressures are high or when complex systems begin to drift away from their core purpose.
My unique perspective has been shaped not only by senior executive roles, but by a rich lived experience of responsibility, deep advocacy, and personal resilience. This combination allows me to:
Challenge constructively without causing defensiveness.
Speak honestly about the elephant in the room.
Stand alongside leaders when difficult, uncomfortable conversations need to happen.
Proven Impact in Practice
Leaders bring me in when decisions carry weight, because I have spent my career personally delivering turnaround results and navigating systemic gridlock. My perspective has been built across complex sectors, including further education, adult community learning, criminal justice, and commercial operations:
Turnaround & Financial Stability: Stepped into an underperforming organisation under immense pressure, restructuring operations to secure a 5-year local council funding settlement and achieving a 300% increase in engagement, reach, and productivity.
Navigating National Structural Transitions: Successfully guided local operations and staff teams through major, complex legislative changes, including the governmental abolition and transition of Healthwatch frameworks.
High-Stakes Public Sector Environments: Designed and delivered targeted adult education and rehabilitation programmes within prisons and youth offending systems, helping complex, vulnerable cohorts build confidence and prepare for life and work.
Complex Operational Logistics: Directed operations for an international language centre, managing large-scale budgets, funding compliance, multi-modal transport logistics, and comprehensive educational and leisure programmes.
Funding & Compliance Mastery: Managed high-value bids, tenders, and European Social Fund (ESF) programmes across training providers and charities, demonstrating a deep operational understanding of rigid funding criteria.
Award-Winning Community Development: Honoured with three independent community awards for my work in community development, including chairing a residents' board to personally secure funding for critical infrastructure, safety initiatives, and leisure parks.
How We Connect
I work best where there is openness, honesty, and a shared commitment to thoughtful, sustainable change. Many of the leaders who bring me in are navigating heavy regulatory scrutiny, funding uncertainty, or system resets. They are looking for calm, independent support that cuts through the noise.
If you care deeply about integrity, accountability, and making sure everyone has a voice, we are aligned.
